Abstract

ABSTRACT
The research carried out focuses on the analysis of the effect of the granulometry variation of the
coarse aggregate on the mechanical and hydraulic properties of a permeable concrete. The
properties evaluated in this work are the compressive strength, flexural strength, and permeability,
parameters considered of greater relevance in this type of concretes. The selected aggregate grades
were three, 1/2” (1/2” a 3/8”), de 3/8” (3/8” a N° 4) y N° 4 (N° 4 a N° 8), where the values within the
parentheses represent the sieves by which the aggregate particles pass and stay respectively. These
graduations were obtained by sieving to a natural coarse aggregate of TMN 1/2 ", extracted from the
Calderón quarry located in the El Milagro district, city of Trujillo, Peru.
For the development of this work, 3 mix designs were prepared considering the same design criteria,
a/c ratio of 0.35, 15% voids, 8% fine aggregate and 25.2% paste volume; following the methodology
provided by ACI 522 R-10 ("Report on Permeable Concrete"). Subsequently, laboratory tests were
performed to determine the mechanical strength, permeability, void content and density. This way,
to evaluate and to compare the behavior of the three graduations of thick aggregate in study reflected
in the properties of the elaborated permeable concretes.
From the obtained results, it was determined that the permeable concrete elaborated with the
graduation Nº 4 presented the greatest resistance to compression and flexion, being these 209.68
kg/cm2 and 33.81 kg/cm2. As for permeability, the 3/8 "graduation was the one that obtained higher
values presenting an average percolation rate of 0.222 cm/s. In addition, the relationship of these
properties to the values obtained in the complementary tests was analyzed to determine the content
of voids and density in the fresh and hardened state of the concrete, a direct relationship being found.
