This thesis was carried out in the city of Trujillo, department of La Libertad. The purpose of this research was to make improvements in the physical and mechanical properties of concrete such as compressive strength, setting time and settlement, since currently the construction boom worldwide brings new challenges and problems to solve. To achieve the objective of this research, it was decided to add ASTM C494 type B additives to the concrete, since these additives fulfill the function of setting retardants. The thesis was justified, due to the demand to compensate the effects of acceleration of setting and at the same time obtain greater resistance to compression, also obtaining greater workability without significant variation in the cost of concrete production.
This thesis is purely an experimental investigation, since the effects on concrete properties had to be observed in the laboratory when adding ASTM C494 type B additives in different percentages. The methodology was based on the characterization of the aggregates, mix design (ACI-211), settlement test (NTP 339.035), forge (NTP 339.082) and compressive strength (NTP 339.034). Type I cement was used, coarse aggregate of nominal maximum size ½ ”, fine aggregate with a fineness modulus 2.79, water / cement ratio 0.55, type B additives were added to the concrete mix; Sika Retarder PE and SikaTard PE in proportions of 0.1, 0.15, , 0.20, 0.25, 0.30 and 0.35 with respect to the weight of the cement. The compression tests were carried out on 4 "and 8" diameter high specimens, tested at 3.7 and 28 days, until the day of their rupture they remained in the curing pool. For the recording of results, notes were taken on collection sheets of each test in Excel templates (settlement, compressive strength and setting time).
It was concluded that the optimum percentage of the Sika Retarder PE additive is 0.30% and 0.25% for that of SikaTard PE with respect to the weight of the cement to improve and optimize the settlement properties, setting time and resistance to compression. It was observed that both had an influence in delaying the setting time, with Sika Retarder PE the compressive strength at the age of 28 days had an increase of 15.85%, while with the SikaTard PE the compressive strength at age 28 days had an increase of 7.39% with respect to the standard specimen.
